Straw-bale day

Well, friends, building straw bale walls is more work that you might think! In the end there were 11 of us, all told – our architect Herwig and his assistant Anne showing us what to do and working alongside us all morning.

We had an early start – cruel on the teenage boys, who don’t ‘do’ mornings. Our young people – Anna, David and Benji – were true heroes and we couldn’t have done it without them. Lena joined us mid-morning and kindly transported the kids back to town mid-afternoon. Ria, Tom and Martin worked like troopers until everything was done.

Chris was unable to participate in the straw-bale labours because of her back injury. But she made us all lunch AND did the dishes afterwards, and in the latter part of the afternoon her company kept us from flagging when we started getting tired.
